Looking Back... One Year Ago...

In addition to the party-time atmosphere surrounding Dave's birthday yesterday, we also celebrated another milestone this weekend: OUR FIRST YEAR IN OUR FIRST HOME!

I've been thinking about this post for a while now, and I think it may take a few posts to get it all out there. I'm envisioning summing up what's been done and what's still on our to-do list as a self-assessment of sorts.

But first, a flashback...

Forgive the grainy photos, but this is what the place looked like in the listing that had us at "Hello!" -- you couldn't have turned this place down if you tried!

(our building, Thorndale Beach North - fictional home of Bob and Emily Hartley on The Bob Newhart Show)
(The living room)
(Living & Dining Room)
(Ye Olde Kitchen)
(2nd Bedroom)
(2nd Bathroom)
(Master Bedroom)
(Master Bathroom)
(Balcony, complete with astroturf)

The view, which you can glimpse in that balcony shot, was always amazing, of course, and as I referenced in our first post and several times since then, it's the constant reminder of why this was a good idea.

More tonight with a look back at projects (planned or not) already completed.

Hello:

This is beautiful. I was looking up some info. on "The Bob Newhart Show" and actually found your blog about life in the building that was used for the exterior shots of the home of "Dr. Bob & Emily Hartley," Thorndale Beach North, on Chicago's North Sheridan Road.

I like your remodeling jobs, am moving myself soon (though only from one city in Massachusetts to another) and wish I had some help from folks like you & your husband.

As it turns out, one of the other units in your building sold a year ago for what I am planning to spend now. If only my health were better, I could move to Thorndale Beach North too. And I would become a Cubs fan. With all those years as a Red Sox fan, I am accustomed to the phrase "Wait until next year!"

Obviously Chicago is not on the coast of an ocean. So by "beach," what is meant in relation to your building? Is it on a lake or a river? May one actually swim in the water there?

Have you made friends with any neighbors in your building who are like navigator "Howard Borden?"

By the way, I saw Bill Dailey about ten years ago, at a TV Land event in Woburn, Massachusetts. He did a pantomime to the accompaniment of Leroy Anderson's "The Typewriter" that was very funny. Actually, I think Bill borrowed that routine from a Jerry Lewis film. But that's okay, was good anyway.

Take care, and I look forward to more pictures of your home improvements. Maybe someday I'll start a blog about my home too.

Jim
